Prepare your files for Shred Day!

There are many documents you need to keep and many you will want to shred. By shredding them, you're protecting your private personal information from identity thieves.  So, what documents should you consider shredding?  Anything that has a signature, account number, social security number, or medical or legal information that you no longer need to retain.  You DO NOT need to remove staples or paperclips!

Here are some documents you might consider shredding for FREE: 

  • Address labels from junk mail and magazines
  • ATM receipts
  • Bank statements (keep for a year)
  • Canceled and voided checks
  • Credit and charge card bills and receipts
  • Credit reports and histories
  • Documents containing maiden name
  • Documents containing passwords or PIN numbers
  • Expired identification cards
  • Home purchase, sale, or improvement documents (keep for at least six years after you sell)
  • Items with a signature
  • Luggage tags
  • Medical records and bills (keep at least one year after payment)
  • Papers with a Social Security number
  • Pay stubs (keep for a year)
  • Pre-approved credit card applications
  • Receipts with checking account numbers
  • Report cards
  • Resumés
  • Tax records and receipts (keep for seven years)
  • Travel itineraries
  • Used airline tickets
  • Utility bills

If you're not sure if you should keep or shred a document, keep it somewhere safe.  Below is a list of items that MUST be kept!

  • Annual insurance policy statements
  • Birth and death certificates
  • Business license
  • Current ID cards and passports
  • House deeds and mortgage documents
  • Marriage license
  • Pension plan documents
  • Retirement plan statements (401(k), 529, IRA, etc.)
  • Social security cards
  • Social security statements
  • Vehicle titles and loan documents
  • Wills, living wills, and powers of attorney
